My husband and I decided to plan our honeymoon in the breathtaking country of Costa Rica by splitting our time between La Fortuna and the Guanacaste Province. We decided to spend 4 nights at Tabacon and were continually amazed by the staff, dining, thermal waters, and all the other accommodations. Here is my Tabacon Resort and Spa review broken out by dining, room accommodations, thermal springs and spa, and employee interactions.

There is no better way to enjoy the beauty of Costa Rica than by experiencing the awe of La Fortuna. It’s an amazing way to unplug and truly soak in the nature of the area, thanks to the welcoming atmosphere of both the people and the landscape itself. My husband and I decided to spend 10 days in Costa Rica for our honeymoon and can’t say enough good things about Tabacon. If you are interested in our full 4-day itinerary, click here.

Common Tabacon Resort and Spa Questions

Is Tabacon worth it?

100% my husband and I tend to be picky when it comes to resorts and we absolutely loved our experience at Tabacon Resort and Spa. The food, spa, service, and accommodations were everything we could’ve dreamed and more!

Is Tabacon all-inclusive?

No, Tabacon is not all-inclusive. We are not all-inclusive people and find that you explore so much more of the area when you have the opportunity to get outside the resort.

Is Tabacon an adults only resort?

No, Tabacon allows kids, but there are adult only areas where you can escape the kiddos!

Tabacon Dining

Breakfast is included in the price and it is a buffet style. I truly mean it when I tell you I am still dreaming of this breakfast. Every day we were presented with a different variation of typical Costa Rican cuisine along with fresh fruit and juices, local coffee, pastries, and an omelet station. Being able to start your day with a delicious and nourishing meal was delightful.

The resort also has two main restaurants as well as other food options provided at their various bars. The restaurant Ave is located close to the thermal waters and is moderately expensive. Toucanes, the restaurant located centrally to the resort, is where breakfast is provided and offers a higher-end dining experience in the evening. Both of these restaurants offer typical Costa Rican cuisine with an upscale culinary experience. These are great options, especially when you are settling into the resort and not wanting to venture into town.

For the foodies, Tabacon also provides a private dining experience called the ephemeral table. Nestled in the rainforest, guests can indulge in a six-course meal accompanied by wine and craft beer tastings.

Accommodations

While at Tabacon, we stayed in their honeymoon suite, which was absolutely perfect. There are two options when booking these suites, one with a plunge pool and another with a tub on the deck overlooking the Arenal Volcano. With these amazing views, one of our favorite activities was bird watching and looking for other wildlife. Of course, this resort also offers rooms with two bedrooms, rainforest views, and jacuzzi accommodations. There are also options to request connecting rooms if you are traveling with a large group.

Thermal Springs and Spa at Tabacon

The thermal hot springs at Tabacon

Situated around lush rainforest flora and waterfalls, the main draw of Tabacon is its thermal waters heated by the Arenal volcano. Visitors will feel completely immersed in nature, surrounded by the peaceful sounds of rushing water, chirping birds, and even howling monkeys.

This area can get pretty crowded since the resort also offers day passes, but Shangri-la is exclusive to hotel guests and is reserved for adults only. I highly suggest this area when staying at Tabacon.

Around the springs are two main areas for drinks and bar snacks. By the pool, there is a swim-up bar and a small food menu. There is another bar at Shangri-la which provides craft cocktails and food with a cabana area.

Tabacon Spa

While staying at Tabacon, you do not want to miss their spa offerings! We decided to splurge on the idyllic package that includes a couples’ massage, an oatmeal face mask, and a milk bath following the massage. We were also provided smoothies and fresh juices while enjoying the milk bath. There are other various spa offerings such as:

  • Body Wraps
  • Body Exfoliations
  • Massage packages
  • Facials
  • Nail Care

Tabacon does everything to such a high standard, I don’t think you could go wrong with any of these offerings. Also, go early to enjoy some of the amenities while waiting for your session.

Employee Interactions

This may seem like a strange section but I think it is much needed due to our experience! I have never been to a resort where I truly felt like everybody working there strived for our experience to be the best possible. The work environment felt very relaxed and employees were engaging and truly interested in conversation and communication with us. Overall, Tabacon is truly exceptional and seems to treat their employees with respect. One employee told us that during Covid-19 when the resort completely shut down, management would come to their houses with food and necessities needed during that time. That was such an inspiring story and an example of a company that truly has their employees best interest.

Final Thoughts

Overall this resort is an amazing option if you want to truly soak in the natural beauty of La Fortuna. This option is great for couples and small families because of the room accommodations and the ability to go to the thermal springs, which is already such a large attraction for the area. I truly don’t have any complaints or criticism for this resort because it exceeded all of our expectations. 100% recommend it if you are interested in visiting the area.
