Logistics of Getting around and To Southport

Transportation

Depending on where you are traveling from, there are a few different options to reach Southport. Once you are downtown, everything is within walking distance to reach all of the shops, restaurants, and main attractions. Listed below are the most popular modes of transportation:

Car

The most popular option for getting to Southport. Once you arrive, parking is free.

Ferry

If you are traveling from the Fort Fisher area, you can take the ferry across the Cape Fear River to reach Southport. The ferry ride takes around 35 minutes and make sure to arrive early as spots fill up quickly. You will be able to drive onto the ferry so you will have transportation once you arrive as well.

Golf Cart

If you are staying in Southport, it may be worth it to look into renting a golf cart. This is a fun way to easily drive around downtown and explore all of the major attractions.

Parking

A great plus to visiting Southport is that parking is FREE. In the summer months, there may be more of a struggle to find a spot, but I didn’t have any issues finding somewhere to park within walking distance of downtown.

Start your Day in Southport

A great way to start your day in Southport is grab some breakfast and a cup of coffee. Listed below are a few different breakfast and coffee shop options for you to enjoy.

  • Saucy Southerner
  • Southport Coffee Co.

Stroll Around Waterfront Park and the Surrounding Area

With coffee in hand, take a stroll along the Riverfront Park to admire boats cruising along the Cape Fear and the wildlife that enhances the coastal charm of Southport. There are swings and sitting areas to enjoy that cup of coffee. Lastly, walk down the pier and admire the Cape Fear River landscape.

You can also walk in the sand and look for shells and other artifacts that the Cape Fear may wash up. However, be careful walking barefoot as there are oyster shells that can easily cut your feet. This is from personal experience, so be aware!

Continue walking parallel to the water and you will eventually turn left to make a square to get around to the local shops. While walking, you will also be able to admire the historic houses.
