While visiting the beautiful white Etretat cliffs, I was amazed by its stunning coastline and was surprised that the cliffs are not more of a known European travel destination. You probably know of the infamous Cliffs of Mohr, but I think the cliffs in Etretat France are comparable in their own way.
While studying abroad in the Normandy region, I had the opportunity to visit and now think it should be included on everyone’s France itinerary. You hear so much about the iconic French cities, but not as much about its natural beauty. I would definitely take advantage of this perfect day trip from Paris and get some fresh air.
Getting to Etretat Cliffs Using Public Transport
From Paris
- Train: TER Train from Saint Lazare Station to Le Havre (2 hours) from there take bus line 21 (1 hour). ~3 hours
- Flix Bus: Several bus options range from 3-4 hours depending on the number of stops. A more straightforward option as you do not have to change modes of public transportation.
From Other Normandy Towns
I would recommend exploring some other Normandy towns if you decide to add Etretat to your itinerary. There is so much history and culture that you could easily spend multiple days in the area. Some other towns I recommend are Rouen, Caen, and the infamous Mont Saint Michel for a Normandy trip itinerary.
From Rouen
- Train: TER Train from Gare du Rouen to Le Havre from there, take bus line 21. ~2 hours
- Flix Bus: Roughly 1.5 hours depending on the number of stops. A more straightforward option as you do not have to change modes of public transportation. ~1.5 hours
From Caen
- Bus: Take bus line 122 to Le Havre (1 hour 40 minutes) and change over to bus line 21. ~1 hour

How to Visit Etretat Cliffs
To start your initial planning, you are probably wondering about the best time to visit Etretat and how much time you need at the beautiful Normandy cliffs.
when to visit Etretat
Etretat is a beautiful place to visit anytime and each season provides you with a unique experience. Listed below are the best months depending on what season you want to visit:
- Summer (July-August): This is the best time to enjoy the warmer temperatures, especially if wanting to sit on the beach and swim in the English Channel. This is also the busiest time so be prepared for crowds.
- Fall (September-November): This is a great time for cooler temperatures and smaller crowds. The normandy region is known for being rainy and cold. Keep that in mind as temperatures begin to drop.
- Winter (December-March): Prepare for cold temperatures, wind and rain! As long as you are dressed properly for the occasion, visiting Etretat during the winter creates a dramatic landscape that matches the iconic Normandy climate.
- Spring (April-June): Similar to fall temperatures. Visit as the vegetation becomes a lush green that pops against the white cliffs.

How long to spend at Cliffs of Etretat
Typically, a day trip is a perfect amount of time to visit Etretat. I urge you to expand to other French cities other than Paris. To me 3-4 hours is pretty time-consuming for a day trip, so try to combine this Normandy excursion with other nearby towns.
How to View the Etretat Cliffs
The main viewpoints of the cliffs are Aval Cliff and Arch, Amont Cliff, Courtine, Manneporte, Roc Vaudieu, and Aiguille de Belval. The best way to see these amazing viewpoints is by either walking or by water. Listed below are the various ways to see the most beautiful cliffs in Normandy.
Hike
Cliffs of Etretat Trail (2.6km): takes you around all of the cliff edges with the major viewpoints including the picturesque arches and the intriguing caves.

Paddleboard / Kayak / Canoe

Seeing the cliffs from the water gives you a unique perspective and lets you get close to the rock formations. To rent water equipment, visit the rental company, Voiles et Galets for more information.
Other Activites in Etretat
The Etretat cliffs and beach are the main attractions in Etretat, but if you have more time check out these other things to do.
Old Covered Market
Located in Marcheal Foch Square, the vieux marche (old market) was created as a seafood market. Today, you can visit the market for various souvenir shops.
Clos de Arsene Lupuin
For Arsene Lupin fans- this museum was originally the home of Maurice Leblanc, who wrote the Arsene Lupin novels. Today the house has been revamped to be the burglar’s lair inspired by the mystery novels.
- Admission: 8.50 euros for adults, 6 euros for children
Church of Notre-Dame de la Garde
This is such a beautiful church situated at the top of the cliffs. Definitely check it out as you are admiring the beautiful scenery.
Etretat Golf Course
If you are a golf fan, then I would add this course to your list. Having the 18 holes situated along the cliffside makes for a unique experience. I am not a golfer, but seeing the course reminds me of the renowned courses in Scotland.
Combine Etretat with Other Normandy Towns
The Normandy region has so many beautiful and quaint towns. If you are interested in visiting other towns close by, I would consider adding Honfleur or Deauville to your Etretat itinerary.
